COVID-19 pandemic has boosted the applications of ozone for disinfection in different areas (water, indoor air, cleaning surfaces…). Researches on effects of ozone application on viruses have been performed for several decades: efficiency assessment, mechanisms of inactivation, application conditions. Published works are quite abundant and recent overviews have been published particularly in Ozone Science & Engineering Journal, but nevertheless little information is available on SARS-CoV-2.
The presentation will provide a general overview on fundamentals and practical considerations for the best use of ozone for inactivating viruses and particularly Sars-CoV-2.

Description
Viral diseases are a special challenge for medicine, as the corona virus disease COVID caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2. The in 2020 globally declared pandemic again fiercely manifests, and the current challenges for medical community.
Prevention
The best of all options is prevention, viral diseases must be avoided. The first priority is hygiene with effective treatment of wastewater, the disinfection of drinking and process water. This has often stopped and prevented epidemics in the past, and here ozone plays a key role. Unfortunately, antiviral effects of ozone don´t come to fruition in virus diseases; they require direct contact with the viruses, most of which, however, hide intracellularly in order to be replicated there. And, in the different forms of medical ozone application, ozone reacts in less than a second with blood components, preferentially with unsaturated fatty acids (with isolated double bonds) of cell membranes.
Ozone as bioregulator
In addition to vaccines, whose development, effectiveness, benefits and risk assessments take many years, an intact immune system is one of the best prerequisites.
